재즈 역사상 가장 위대한 기타리스트들 중 한 명으로 많이 알려져 있으며, 호소력 있고 감미로운 음색의 보컬리스트이기도 하다.
1943년 펜실베이니아 주 피츠버그에서 출생했다. 4살부터 우쿨렐레를 연주할 정도로 음악에 관심을 보였다.
7살 무렵에는 나이트 클럽에서 무대에 설 정도로 원숙한 실력을 보여줬으며, 더 성장한 이후 잭 맥더프(Jack Mcduff)의 밴드에 참여했지만 이듬해 탈퇴한다. (나무위키)
