70년대 보스톤에서 데뷔한 제이 가일스 밴드는 당초 블루스 록을 연주하는 밴드였다.
그러나 10여년동안 무명으로 지내다가 당시 음악계에 엄청난 파장을 일으킨 뉴웨이브와 디스코의 영향을 받아들여 변신을 시도 1981년 Centerfold로 비로소 대중적인 성공을 누리기 시작했다.
Centerfold란 책자의 가운데 접혀져서 재단된 부분이며 이곡에서는 플레이 보이 잡지의 여자를 말하는 것으로 이들은 주로 도시의 밤에 사는 여자들을 노래하는것으로도 유명 하다.
