미국 Asheville 태생으로 Howard University에서 음악을 전공하고 학교 졸업 후 클럽가수로 활동하던 중 Les McCann에게 픽업되어 Atlantic과 계약을 맺어 69년 앨범 [First Take]로 데뷔한다.
이중 `The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face`가 히트하며 순조로운 출발을 보였으며 이후 `"Killing Me Softly With His Song`, `Feel Like Makin'' Love` 등을 히트시키며 70년대를 대표하는 소울싱어로 성장한다.
83년에는 투어파트너로 친분을 맺은 Peabo Bryson과 `Tonight, I Celebrate My Love`를 크게 히트시켰으며 91년에는 Maxi Priest와 듀엣으로 부른 `Set the Night to Music`을 히트시키며 시대를 초월한 가수로 꾸준히 인기를 모으고 있다.
